Dark Patterns Through the Lens of Accessibility

Dark Patterns harm all users. Even more harmful, manipulative dark patterns designed to trick users undermine accessibility efforts and have an inordinate negative impact on people with disabilities. Approximately 15 percent of the world’s population have a disability, according to the World Health Organization, which means that more than one billion people could face daily challenges when using digital devices. When a company decides to make their digital products accessible, tolerance of Dark Patterns can completely undermine their credibility and real world accessibility. Joe Devon, co-founder of Global Accessibility Awareness Day and an expert on accessibility, will walk you through how dark patterns diminish the web experience for people with disabilities and discuss ways to change this at your organization. He will also touch on the financial burden of not designing inclusively, and ways to plan and structure your design with accessibility in mind.
